Orange NSW. 11.4°C

The Orange NSW region is the perfect destination for idyllic family time. Give your children treasured memories of playing in glorious parks in piles of autumn leaves, filling baskets with freshly picked juicy cherries or being snuggled in their sleeping bags under the stars.

There are many orchards and berry farms in the region that offer a pick-your-own experience. Though many may find their way to mouths than back to the car, that’s just part of the fun. Orange wineries are also starting to take note and becoming more family-friendly, with some offering a sweet petting zoo experience adjacent to the tasting rooms.

Bring history to life with a stroll down one of the well-preserved streets of the surrounding villages -  feel as though you could be walking down the street on a sunny day in 1900. See a movie at a former travelling picture show, or discover the place where bushrangers made the biggest gold robbery in NSW.

Pack the picnic blanket and head to one of the many tranquil picnic spots. Let the kids burn off some energy at one of the many fantastic play areas around the town, as you enjoy a picnic lunch of the local produce readily available throughout the region. For the adventurous, there are caves and old mines safe for exploring - don’t forget your torch! Camp by the banks of picturesque waterways; grab a fishing line and help the little ones catch their first fish. Toast marshmallows and sleep under the stars. Such simple pleasures will become treasured family memories.

Age of Fishes Museum

The Age of Fishes Museum is located in Canowindra in the heart of the beautiful Central West of New South Wales and is the number one tourist attraction in the Canowindra area. It is located on the edge of town in a flat and accessible area with easy parking.

Imagine a world ruled by fish! Long before the dinosaurs the mighty rivers of the Central West teamed with bizarre ancient fishes - fish with armoured shells, fish with lungs, and huge predators with jaws like
crocodiles. Thousands of their fossils were found at Canowindra and give a unique glimpse into the Devonian Period - the 'Age of Fishes'.

The Museum displays many of these beautiful fossils together with live aquarium displays and wonderful recreations of life in the Devonian
period, 360 million years ago.

The Age of Fishes Museum offers two permanent exhibitions, an
education hub, a picnic area, and a geological time walk set in beautiful gardens. Bring a picnic or barbecue on the peaceful grounds while the kids play on the giant game boards. Groups are welcome- please book in advance for groups of 10 or more.

There is also a well-stocked shop on site which includes local honey and produce as well as a huge range of fossils, educational items and gifts.
