Orange NSW. 17.3°C

Though long-known for its excellent local produce, cool-climate wines and fine dining restaurants, the gastronomic scene in Orange NSW has exploded in recent years cementing its status as one of Australia’s most prominent and sophisticated food and wine destinations.

Known as ‘Australia’s Food Basket’, the region is a haven of vineyard-dotted hills and abundant stonefruit and orchards. The combination of high altitude, a cool climate and rich volcanic soil create prime conditions for growing grapes, cherries, peaches, plums, apples, figs, quinces, truffles and so much more.

The district’s unique viticulture produces fine cool-climate wines, which visitors will begin to recognise as they taste their way through the region’s many cellar doors.

Not only can visitors buy direct from growers at local farmgates and cellar doors, the fortnightly Orange Farmers Market makes the perfect place to sample the flavours of the region. Grab a coffee and hearty bacon and egg roll and soak up the atmosphere of this wonderful community event.

The town celebrates its diverse food and wine scene with numerous festivals throughout the year attracting visitors from across Australia, but none more popular than long-running Orange F.O.O.D Week. This ten-day autumnal feast features events such as a progressive eight-course degustation through the regions most scenic vistas. Similarly Orange Wine Festival is another highlight. Over two weeks in October the community unites to celebrate its unique viticulture and thriving wine industry with a packed program of inspired experiences and events.

For a thoroughly hands-on experience with the region’s local produce a number of cooking classes are available. Using local fare, learn to prepare delicious dishes from some of Australia’s top chefs and local producers. Or simply visit one of the many excellent cafes and restaurants in the region, which pride themselves on menus packed with local produce.
