Beside the Belubula river in the beautiful red-earth countryside, sits the town of Canowindra NSW. Well known for hot air ballooning and fish fossil discoveries, today it is also an arts and tourism hub in the region.

The town’s charming main street has an old-world air, with verandah posts lining its unique curved street. 19th century buildings remain, housing a number of boutique homewares stores and art galleries, however Canowindra has retained the integrity and character of a classic country town.

The town became famous in 1955, when a 360 million year old fossil was found. Today, you can see it among other fascinating exhibits at the amazing Age of Fishes Museum, described by broadcaster Sir David Attenborough as ‘world class’.

Canowindra is a very popular destination for hot air balloon rides. Visitors can experience the exhilaration of watching the sun rise over the sweeping plains followed by a champagne breakfast. The yearly Canowindra Balloon Glow and Night Market is a highlight of the region’s calendar.

Despite being small, there is a burgeoning café and arts and crafts scene in town. Canowindra is rich in community spirit, there are many active organisations including a strong Country Women’s Association presence, Lions Club and a community garden.
